TRASH IS A TREASURE, HON
- “I never thought I’d feel nostalgic for a now–vanished trailer park that I probably wouldn’t have been caught dead in when it was there. But that’s the effect of Carolina Moon, Michael Wanzie’s occasionally outrageous tribute to the Carolina Moon Trailer Park, the set of low rent lodgings that used to snuggle up next to the Parliament House [all-gay] Motel and nightclub on Orange Blossom Trail.”
The Parliament House’s new owners are closing the trailer court, and many of the court’s residents — such as Lenny, the man with an Air-Stream built around him and his iron lung — have nowhere else to go. “The comedy pulls in and parks amid the lives of some unusual trailer court residents – [Mrs. Hank Flinders]‘s a blousy woman with one errant curler that keeps flopping down in front of her face; … Tupperware loving Mellie, whose uptight demeanor falls prey every so often to a major facial tic … you’ll roar along with everybody else at Normal Anne, the child ballerina, and at poor Lenny with his iron lung: you’ll suppress a sigh at the displacement of Edmund and his one-legged duck … Sit back and enjoy.” -
